We like Chrome! (And Open Source)

September 5th, 2008

So we have been testing the new browser Chrome, www.google.com/chrome, with the fonedit application for the last couple of days and so far we are very impressed.  There is now some consensus in the team that we should try to integrate Google Gears into the next iteration of the fonedit app, this looks to be a fairly big job to do so we wont let that distract us from a product launch (hopefully) this month!

On a different note we have formally agreed a strategy shift to Open Source software for the application.  We are filing the software under the Creative Commons: Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 UK: Scotland license.

Creative Commons License

I’d like to assure developers and organisations who might want to use the service that Open Source does not mean free!  This is an important distinction that is often misinterpreted, the only requirement is that the elements of your code that contain our application/api calls must be available in an Open Source format.  This doesn’t mean the whole of your application/service must be Open Source only the bit that contains our code.  We also have a Share-Alike mark on this as we’d like to see how and what changes you made to the code so we can integrate them into the main software.  This will allow us to digitally sign the code for easier deployment as well as improve the service for the user-base as a whole.

We’ll try to shed some more light on the new site soon…

What is fonedit?

August 2nd, 2008

We’ve had a few questions of late about what fonedit might be, we can’t tell you just yet (sorry!) but we should have more news for you by the end of August!

We’ll post some sneak peaks over the next week or so.

In the mean time why don’t you post some comments with what you think it might be!
